Four men have been charged after 53 migrants perished in a hot 18-wheeler in San Antonio, Texas, in the south-central United States, authorities said on Wednesday.
Homero Zamorano Jr., 45, was charged with human smuggling resulting in death on Wednesday (DOJ). Local media say he has a long criminal record from the 1990s.
Christian Martinez, 28, was detained in Palestine, Texas, on Tuesday and charged with conspiring to transport undocumented migrants who died.
According to the announcement, Zamorano and Martinez communicated about the smuggling.
The international news agency reported that Zamorano and Martinez risk life in jail or the death penalty if convicted, the report said.
Both Juan Claudio D’Luna-Mendez and Juan Francisco D’Luna-Bilbao, both Mexican citizens, were accused of illegally possessing weapons on Tuesday.
On Monday, police arrested them at the tractor-San trailer’s Antonio address.
Craig Larrabee, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in San Antonio, called it “the worst” in the US.
Francisco Garduno Yanez, president of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute, claimed the fake-plate tractor-trailer was carrying 67 migrants on Monday.
Fire Chief Charles Hood said there was no water or air conditioning in the refrigerated tractor-trailer. Those who recovered alive had heatstroke and fatigue.
San Antonio reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius) on Monday, but the crowded trailer was likely much hotter.
“It’s unspeakable,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said on Tuesday. “It’s a tragedy beyond explanation.”
As per the Texas Tribune, undocumented migrants entering Texas risk dying.
