A two time Oscar nominated star, Shirley Knight, who went on to play variety of iconic roles, has died aged 83.

According to Shirley Knight’s daughter, her mother died at her home in San Marcos, Texas.

The legendary actress’s work in ‘The Dark at the Top of the Stairs’ and ‘Sweet Bird’ of Youth earned her two Oscar nominations.

Shirley played many astonishing roles in TV, movies and stage as her career carried her to Hollywood, then to New York theater and London, and back to Hollywood.

Moreover, she was nominated for two Tonys, winning one.

In recent years, she had a recurring role as Phyllis Van de Kamp (the mother-in-law of Marcia Cross’ character) in the long-running ABC show Desperate Housewives.

It gained one of her many Emmy nominations.

Knight was married to American actor and producer Gene Persson from 1959 until their divorce in 1969.

However, they had one child, actress Kaitlin Hopkins.

Her second marriage was to English writer John Hopkins from 1969 until his death in 1998.

She and Hopkins raised her daughter with Persson together.

They had one child, elementary school teacher Sophie C. Hopkins.

Knight died of natural causes on April 22, 2020 at her daughter Kaitlin Hopkin’s home in.
