Spacey claims that his “neo-Nazi” father prevented him from coming out as gay

 Kevin Spacey admitted in court on Monday that his father’s homophobic, racist, and anti-Semitic sentiments made it difficult for him to openly come out as gay.

“My father was a white supremacist and a neo-Nazi,” Spacey said of his father, Thomas Fowler. “I have never talked about these things publicly ever.” He added, “I grew up in a very complicated family dynamic.”

The confession, according to a source, was made while Spacey was testifying in a $40 million civil action against Anthony Rapp, an American actor and singer.

Rapp claims that in 1986, when he was 14 years old, Spacey made inappropriate sexual attempts toward him. Rapp called Spacey a phoney for not being out as gay in his own testimony.

“To call someone a fraud is to say someone is living a lie,” Spacey said, according to ‘Variety’. “I wasn’t living a lie. I was just reluctant to talk about my personal life.”

Spacey recalled that his family regularly moved due to his father’s repeated unemployment while he was growing up. He claimed that growing up, he was “terrified” and “had to listen” to his father’s racist and xenophobic speeches, which kept him from inviting friends around.

Don’t be an f-word, his father reportedly urged him when he informed him he wanted to be an actor. Spacey added that he didn’t want to use the phrase because it would be seen negatively in a courtroom since it is offensive.

In addition to appearing in the Netflix series “House of Cards,” Spacey was one of Hollywood’s most celebrated performers, earning Oscars for his performances in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty.” However, his career collapsed after Spacey was accused of sexual assault by Rapp in a 2017 article and by other accusers who levelled the same charges against him.
