Last-minute nationwide rail strikes cancelled
The Rail, Maritime, and Transport union (RMT) suspended several statewide railway strikes.
Transit workers planned to strike November 7 and 9 over months-long salary and working conditions conflicts.
RMT announced “unconditional” negotiations with Network Rail 10 hours before the walkout.
The 80,000-member union will begin “intense negotiations” with the corporation and rail operators.
Network Rail signaling workers in England, Scotland, and Wales struck.
‘The current dispute is very much live, and the union is continuing its re-ballot of members to seek a fresh mandate for action with the result due on 15 November,’ the RMT noted.
Network Rail’s senior negotiator, Tim Shoveller, advised commuters to delay rebooking.
‘It’s welcome news that the RMT has called off its strikes but the very late notice means that services for tomorrow cannot be reinstated and will remain extremely limited, and while we, and our train company partners, will work without pause over the weekend, there will be limited ability to change the “strike timetable” for Monday,’ he said.
‘Please verify before you travel and on Saturday and Monday and only travel by rail if necessary.’
RMT national secretary Mick Lynch said: ‘The prospect of strike action and our highly supported industrial campaign has helped the train employers see reason.
‘We have always desired a negotiated settlement and will continue to fight for it in this next phase of serious talks.
‘Our priority is our members, and we are working toward a job security, decent salary hike, and good working conditions arrangement.
‘Our re-ballot remains active and if we have to strike during the next six months to secure a settlement, we will.’
November 10 London Underground strikes are unannounced.
Unions are planning strikes as food and fuel prices soar and wages stagnate.
Mr. Lynch said industrial action is the only option for postal workers, waste collectors, contact center workers, and criminal defense lawyers.
In August, he told Sky News that workers are reacting to their treatment.
Daily poverty is increasing. Bills cannot be paid. The workplace mistreats them.
I expect coordinated action.
