Avatar takes place in the fictional world of Pandora, as anyone who has seen the first film will know. Except for the scenes in which former US Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) returns to Earth.

However, at the end of the first film, Jake gives up his Earthly body for good, preferring to live in his Na’vi body with Neyirtri (Zoe Saldaa) forever.

According to producer Jon Landau, it may come as a surprise to audiences that some of Avatar 5 will take place on Earth. “In movie five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth,” he explained to Gizmodo, “And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.”

It’s been over a decade since we last visited Pandora, but it’s clear that legendary director James Cameron‘s Avatar universe has been in the works behind the scenes.

With only a few weeks until the long-awaited release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the discussion surrounding Pandora has never been more prominent, including Cameron’s subsequent three sequels.

Surprisingly, Neyirtri is the primary motivation for removing items from Pandora. In 2009’s Avatar, Earth is tainted by the presence of the RDA, an organization with a significant – and self-serving – influence over many of Pandora’s affairs.

Prolific producer Landau explained that there is a strong desire to expose Neyirtri to the best that Earth has to offer outside of the RDA. “The RDA is not the only representation of Earth,” he told the publication. “Just as your choices in life define you, not all humans are bad.” Not every Na’vi is good. That is also true here on Earth. And we’d like to expose Neytiri to it.”

Avatar 5 is currently scheduled for release in 2028, with the other sequels in the series following in the years following.

Unlike the other ventures, it is not believed to have begun filming as of yet. Essentially, its fate is determined by the reactions of the aforementioned films’ audiences.

Cameron previously stated that he may not direct the subsequent sequels, instead considering passing the torch to another director.

As if the stakes surrounding Avatar 2’s upcoming release weren’t high enough, it also has to compete with the legacy of its box-office-breaking predecessor.

In addition to becoming the first film in history to feature such advanced technology and breathtaking graphics, it also became the first film in history to gross $2.9 billion in total box office.

Time will tell how the Avatar universe unfolds, but the cast has promised big things for Avatar 2, so Pandora’s future looks bright.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in theatres on December 16.
