Morne Morkel to join New Zealand women’s coach group
Morne Morkel, a former South African fast-bowler, will join the New Zealand coaching staff for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Morkel, a regular on the coaching circuit and a member of Namibia’s men’s group at last year’s T20 World Cup, will join the White Ferns following SA20 duties and ahead of their opening tournament encounter against Australia on February 11.
“The women’s game is fast rising around the world, and this is a fantastic opportunity for me to gain experience in the women’s game and offer my understanding of international cricket to assist this squad improve,” Morkel said.
“I’ve been paying careful attention to the women’s game and the White Ferns over the last few years, especially after moving to Australia and witnessing their players who have participated in the Women’s Big Bash.”
Morkel will give fast bowling and overall coaching help during the event, drawing on his wealth of expertise in South African conditions.
“It’s a talented set of players and they have a very exciting pace bowling assault which I’ll be able to complement Ben (Sawyer) with.
“I know a lot about South African circumstances and have spent a lot of time working here in the last year, so I’ll be able to share some vital expertise with this squad during the tournament.”
“Playing in a World Cup is always exhilarating, so I’m looking forward to sharing that experience with the group and helping them reach their goals. “I’m definitely looking forward to meeting the group and getting started when they arrive in South Africa.”
