According to Variety, the single’s strong performance suggests that when the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 are revealed this upcoming Monday, it will come out on top. The previous record holder is BTS’ “Butter,” which according to the publication set a then-record with 99.37 million Spotify streams in its first seven days.
On January 12, the former Hannah Montana performer and songwriter debuted the upbeat new song and music video. It is the first sample from her new album Endless Summer Vacation, which will be released on March 10.
Because parts of the lyrics appeared to allude to previous high-profile occurrences in the couple’s relationship, fans instantly started to believe that the new song has multiple references to her famous romance with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
The couple first met in 2009 while filming The Last Song, the movie adaptation of the well-known Nicholas Sparks book. They dated intermittently over the following few years before becoming engaged in 2012. Later, Cyrus and Hemsworth decided to call off their engagement, delaying their wedding from April to September of that same year.
In the beginning of 2016, they rekindled their engagement after a year apart. Then, in December 2018, Cyrus and Hemsworth became husband and wife. They later divorced in August 2019. Cyrus and Hemsworth have not commented on any speculation regarding connections between the song, music video and their relationship.
