Mark Steven Johnson explain why “Daredevil” sequel was never produced
Some of the initial ideas for a Daredevil sequel that was never produced on the big screen have been revealed by the director of the 2003 film. Recently, Mark Steven Johnson discussed the movie for its 20th anniversary with Yahoo! Entertainment. Ben Affleck played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the movie, and Jennifer Garner played Elektra Natchios.
A Daredevil sequel was never produced, in contrast to Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man movie and Bryan Singer’s 2000 X-Men movie. Instead, a 2005 sequel to the Elektra movie starring Jennifer Garner was made. Johnson claimed that the outcome of the spin-off will determine whether a Daredevil sequel would be produced. According to Johnson, the intention was to first produce an Elektra film before moving on to another Daredevil project if it was successful. “Unfortunately, everything kind of faded away after the Elektra movie didn’t pan out. I didn’t work at all on that one.”
Johnson also discussed one of the plots he hoped to tell in a follow-up. Johnson stated, “I knew I wanted to do more of Matt’s romance with Ellen Pompeo’s Karen Page. In the first movie, Pompeo’s portrayal of Karen makes a fleeting appearance at the law firm where Matt and Foggy Nelson (Jon Favreau) work. When she states that Matt is permitted to bring a guest to a ball, Karen alludes to her romantic interest in Matt. Deborah Ann Woll’s portrayal of Karen Page in the Netflix television series gave her a later, more important part. Even at the start of the second season of the show, Karen and Matt (Charlie Cox) began dating.
Despite the fact that a Daredevil sequel was never produced, several of the film’s contributors went on to work in the superhero industry. Afterwards, Johnson helmed the 2007 Marvel movie Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage. Upon the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Affleck would later don the Batman costume in the DC Extended Universe. In the DCEU movie The Flash from this year, Affleck will return as Batman. Following his role as Bullseye in Daredevil, Colin Farrell went on to play the Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot in Matt Reeves’ movie The Batman. Moreover, Farrell will portray the role in an HBO Max television series.
The Kingpin/Wilson Fisk was portrayed by Michael Clarke Duncan; he later appeared in Neil Patrick Harris’ Spider-Man: The New Animated Series on MTV. The first Iron Man movie, which launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was directed by Favreau later. He also oversaw the direction of Iron Man 2 in 2010. In the MCU, Favreau also portrays Happy Hogan. Despite the lack of a Daredevil sequel, Cox played Matt Murdock in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was a continuation of the Netflix series.
