Andrew Garfield “made his own decision” to respond to Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscars joke

 Andrew Garfield’s brilliant response to Jimmy Kimmel‘s joke, the Oscars host. The actor from Tick, Tick… Bang! also got praise on social media after being greeted by the audience’s sluggish applause.

Molly McNearney, the producer of the 95th Academy Awards event and Kimmel’s wife, has now provided an explanation for Garfield’s viral response and disclosed that he and other celebrities were informed of the incident prior to the program airing.

The host promised that there would not be a repeat of last year’s slap during the celebrity-studded event on Sunday (12 March) because he has put together a top team to stop such “violence”.

He also mentioned Michael B. Jordan, Steve Spielberg, and Pedro Pascal before saying, “You are going to have to do battle with Michelle Yeoh before you get to me.

The camera shifted to Garfield as Kimmel declared, “You are going to have to tangle with Spider-Man!” Garfield had an odd smile while still seated.

The audience also seemed perplexed, but they delayed their applause since they thought Tom Holland rather than Garfield would be on the screen. All of the actors whose names were mentioned in the ceremony were briefed beforehand, according to McNearney.

In an interview with Variety, McNearney said, “I walked up to Steven Spielberg, Michael, Pedro, Andrew, and we told them you are going to be on camera minutes before the show starts. You will be referred to by Jimmy as a member of his security detail. If you could just give him a fist bump or demonstrate some sort of physical support. All the celebrities were enthusiastic and helpful, but Garfield made his own decision when asked if he would perform a Spider-Man web-sling.

Garfield’s choice was deemed to be “even better” by McNearney.
