Sports Minister Supports Mbonambi Amid World Cup Storm
South Africa’s sports minister, Zizi Kodwa, has voiced his support for rugby player Bongi Mbonambi, who is facing allegations of using a racial slur towards England’s Tom Curry during last Saturday’s World Cup semi-final.
Kodwa took to the social media platform X to express solidarity, saying, “Bongi Mbonambi represents us.
We stand by you, Bongi, and the entire Springboks team as they gear up for the World Cup final.”
The 32-year-old Mbonambi is currently the subject of investigations by both World Rugby and the South African national rugby union.
If these investigations confirm the use of the racial slur, he could be sidelined for the final against New Zealand this Saturday, which would be a significant setback for the Springboks in their quest for a historic fourth World Cup victory.
In a show of support, many South Africans, including Mbonambi’s fellow teammates, have defended him by suggesting that the alleged slur might have been a mishearing of an Afrikaans phrase that sounds similar but carries a different meaning.
