Djokovic Eager for Epic Showdown: Aiming to Face Nadal Once More
In a press conference during the 2023 ATP Finals, Serbian tennis maestro Novak Djokovic expressed his anticipation for a potential final showdown with long-time rival Rafael Nadal, who recently confirmed his imminent return to the sport.
Djokovic, currently competing in the ATP Finals, shared his desire to face Nadal once more, labeling their rivalry as the most significant in tennis history based on the sheer number of matches played. The 36-year-old, who secured a three-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz, reflected on the importance of a final clash between the two tennis legends.
“I think it would be nice for the sport to have at least one more match between Nadal and me. That’s the biggest rivalry in terms of the amount of matches played that this sport ever had. Hopefully that can happen,” said the Serbian.
Djokovic commended Nadal’s indomitable spirit, highlighting the Spaniard’s resilience in the face of injuries throughout his illustrious career. Despite setbacks, Nadal has consistently demonstrated a “never give up” mentality that commands respect and admiration from fellow players and fans alike.
“He’s a big warrior. He’s somebody that really never gives up. With all the injuries that he had, keeps going. That’s definitely something that you have to respect and admire about him and his spirit. For the world of tennis, no doubt that it’s amazing news that he’ll be back,” Djokovic added.
Earlier in the week, Nadal shared his positive progress, expressing newfound confidence in his return to the court. The 22-time Grand Slam winner revealed, “Until now, I didn’t know if I would ever play tennis again, and now I think so. What has changed from a few weeks ago to now is that now I know that I am going to play tennis again.”
The historic rivalry between Nadal and Djokovic dates back to their first encounter at Roland Garros in 2006, marking the beginning of a tennis saga. Over the years, they have engaged in 59 matches, setting a record in men’s tennis for the most head-to-head battles. Memorable moments include the epic 2012 Australian Open final, which lasted a staggering 5 hours and 53 minutes, with Djokovic emerging victorious.
As Nadal inches closer to his comeback, tennis enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the possibility of witnessing one last chapter in this legendary rivalry, adding another layer of excitement to the sport.
