Malta’s digital and high-tech industry has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, now accounting for a substantial 20% of the country’s GDP. This impressive success stems from the government’s proactive approach in promoting and incentivizing related projects and businesses, a strategy that has attracted global attention.

The Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), established five years ago, spearheads the country’s commitment to becoming a digital hub. The MDIA plays a pivotal role in formulating and enforcing regulatory standards that ensure compliance with international obligations. Over the past five years, the MDIA has been instrumental in shaping Malta’s digital landscape, with notable achievements such as the launch of the Strategy and Vision for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Malta 2030.

This blueprint outlines the government’s focus on investment, resources, and strategic initiatives to maximize benefits for Malta and its contributions to the global economy. “Our goals are threefold: enhancing the digital AI literacy of our population, attracting AI investment to Malta, and implementing AI-powered e-government services,” explains Kenneth Brincat, MDIA CEO.

To support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the MDIA is expanding access to high-performance computing for start-ups, SMEs, and research institutions. Additionally, the MDIA offers scholarships for students pursuing Master’s or Ph.D. degrees in AI, blockchain, or cybersecurity, fostering a strong pool of expertise in the country.

Malta’s thriving digital industry serves as a testament to the government’s foresight and commitment to innovation. As the country continues to embrace cutting-edge technologies, its digital sector is poised to play an even more significant role in driving economic growth and prosperity.
