Five-legged lamb: Australian farmer finds unique lamb in his flock
A wool farmer in Australia said a lamb from his family's flock...
This year, a Wisconsin farmer raised a 2,520-pound pumpkin that was thought to be the heaviest in the country, but it was excluded from competition owing to a crack.
Mike Schmit of Markesan has been producing enormous pumpkins for years, but this was the first year one of his gourds weighed more than 2,500 pounds.
Schmit’s 2,520-pound pumpkin was thought to be the largest grown in the United States this year, but it was rejected due to a fingernail-sized fracture in the vegetable’s shell.
The break, according to the gardener, was caused by internal pressure caused by the pumpkin’s big size and odd growth pattern.
Schmit could have won $22,680 at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California in 2021, which provides a $9-per-pound reward to the winner.
He told the media, “It happens. There’s no crying in pumpkin growing.”
“I know I can do it again, so we just gotta look forward to the future,” he added.
Steve Geddes of Boscawen, N.H., achieved the all-time record for a pumpkin grown in the United States in 2018, with a pumpkin weighing 2,528 pounds.
