World record: Bird flies nonstop for 8,000 miles to Australia

A bird has flown nonstop covering 8,000 miles from Alaska to Australia, a bar-tailed godwit has set a new world record.

The bar-tailed godwit’s aerodynamic form has been compared to that of a jet fighter, and the epic journey set a new world record.

The male bird, which was carrying a small solar-powered satellite tracker, took off from the United States on September 17 and flew for 239 hours before landing 10 days later in Australia.

The species was on its way to its summer home in New Zealand when it was forced to take a detour due to strong winds over the Pacific.

Last year, the same godwit set a world record by flying nonstop from Alaska to New Zealand.

Male godwits may weigh up to 14 ounces and double in size by eating mollusks, worms, and insects before taking long journeys around the world.

Every year of their projected lifespan, bar-tailed godwits breed in Alaska but spend the summer in New Zealand.
