An endangered bear was discovered on the balcony of a couple who live near a national park in central Italy after a suspected burglar was heard on their balcony.
In a Facebook post, Annalisa Castagna claimed she and her husband, Claudio Paravano, thought a burglar was on their balcony in Pescosolido, a village on the outskirts of the Abruzzo National Park, so they stepped outside to check.
According to Castagna, the investigation was successful “a close encounter with the bear. We were face to face, less than a meter away.”
The woman said she could “count all the teeth he had in his mouth plus the red tongue,” since she was that close to the bear.
Castagna returned to the home, but Paravano escaped the bear by jumping from the balcony. Castagna stated he is currently healing from a shattered pelvis.
The park is home to roughly 60 endangered Marsican bears, according to Pescosolido Mayor Donato Bellisario.
Authorities went to the couple’s balcony to attempt to figure out what lured the bear to their home, but they couldn’t come up with anything.
A Marsican bear had been observed in the adjacent town of San Donato Val Di Comino only a few days before.
The bear was spotted soaking in a public garden’s fountain. It was unclear if the two sightings were caused by the same bear.
