A 26-Year-Old Man saves lives attacking Monterey Park Shooter

In the predominantly Asian American city of Monterey Park, California, on the eve of the Lunar New Year, a shooter opened fire on Star Ballroom Dance Studio, killing 11 people and injuring another 10.

If not for the acts of a 26-year-old guy at a second dancing class in nearby Alhambra, where the suspect went after the shooting at Star Ballroom, the death toll may have been significantly higher.

When the shooter entered the building, Brandon Tsay, whose family runs Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, lunged at him and snatched the semiautomatic handgun out of his hands.

Tsay claimed in a GMA interview that he was watching the ballroom dancers when he heard the front door close and the sound of metal clinking together as the suspect reloaded his gun.

Tsay looked back and noticed the shooter. “”My first thought was I was gonna die here,” he said.

Tsay told the New York Times that the suspect’s appearance and the weapon he was holding led him to believe that the man was looking for targets.

Tsay said of the weapon, “From his body language, his facial expression, his eyes, he was looking for people”.

A heated battle between them is captured on security footage when he lunged at the gunman and snatched the gun. Tsay told GMA that after being struck in the face and on the back of his head by the suspect, he was still able to grab the gun from the gunman and direct it at the suspect.

The man stood there “contemplating whether to fight or to run away,” Tsay claimed when he had expected him to escape.

Tsay remarked,”I really thought I would have to shoot him if he came at me, “This is when he turned around and walked out the door.”

The shooter was allegedly disarmed with the assistance of two men, however, CCTV footage shows Tsay tussling with the suspect by himself. The unknown is the identity of the second person police were referring to.

Tsay, a computer programmer who spends a few days each week at Lai Lai’s ticketing counter, expressed disbelief at the encounter.

“I was shaking all night. I couldn’t believe what happened,” he said. “After waking up, I noticed there was bruising over my body. My face has a bruise across the nose, and the back of my head has some bruising.”

The community is in shock following the tragedy on Saturday night. According to statistics provided by the city, more than 65% of the population of Monterey Park, which is renowned as America’s first suburban Chinatown, is Asian.

When families join together for a reunion supper on the night of the Lunar New Year, it is an important moment for the celebrations. Monterey Park hosted a New Year’s event for locals earlier that day.

Huu Can Tran, 72, who was confirmed as the shooter, was a frequent visitor to Star Ballroom, according to his ex-wife, who spoke to CNN. Although Tran remained at large the next day, he was discovered dead on Sunday after a self-inflicted gunshot wound when police approached his vehicle in Torrance, a city located approximately 30 miles from Monterey Park.

Initially, police reported that the incident had claimed the lives of 10. One of the four injured patients being treated at LAC + USC Medical Center on Monday had “succumbed to their serious injuries,” the hospital said in a statement.

Witnesses to the shooting at Star Ballroom have provided frightening tales of what happened.

Two pals of a woman named Shally who gave her name to ABC7 had passed away that evening.

When the shooter entered the room and started firing, Shally was dancing with her longtime dance partner and friend. Together, they ducked under a table.

Shally claimed that she attempted to awaken her dance partner after the shooter had fled. He had been shot in the back and had passed away, she realised when she noticed her hands stained with blood.

After the initial exchange of gunfire, Shally claimed she believed the incident was finished, but the shooter reloaded and kept firing.

She informed ABC7 that the Asian man who was her dance partner was a friend of her husband and was 62 years old. For the previous eight to ten years, they had gone out dancing once a week.

One of those killed was Ming Wei Ma, the proprietor and dance instructor of Star Ballroom, according to witnesses.

“Mr. Ma, who is very beloved and respected in the dance community and he’s been doing that for over 20 years,” his friend Eric Chen told. “He was trying to stop the shooter and he passed away.”

Disney notoriously never released the film on home video or streaming since it has been criticised for decades.

Others on social media side-eyed the sadness over its closure because of its history.

Disney declared that the log ride’s Song of the South theme would be dropped in favour of tying into the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog in 2020. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will be the name of the latest iteration of the ride.

An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by Disney World. When Splash Mountain at Disneyland will close has not yet been specified.

Splash Mountain will still be a water-filled log ride even though it won’t be Splash Mountain anymore. This is a regular occurrence in Disney parks. Guardians of the Galaxy is now the inspiration for Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure. Disney World’s Stitch’s Great Escape was formerly Alien Encounter. Hazing victim family to get $3 million from Bowling’s University

A settlement was struck with Bowling university, according to a statement made on Monday by the family of a Bowling Green State University Stone Foltz who passed away from alcohol poisoning while pledging a fraternity in 2021.

According to a university inquiry, Stone, 20, passed away on March 4, 2021, during an off-campus fraternity initiation ceremony where he and fellow Pi Kappa Alpha pledges were each handed a bottle of alcohol and instructed to drink it all.

“The Foltz family and Bowling Green State University are forever impacted by the tragic death of Stone Foltz, “Foltz’s family and Bowling Green State University announced.

“This resolution keeps the Foltz family and BGSU community from reliving the tragedy for years to come in the courtroom and allows us to focus on furthering our shared mission of eradicating hazing in Ohio and across the nation. Leading these efforts in our communities is the real work that honours Stone.”

Foltz was discovered unresponsive in his residence by his roommate during the fraternity gathering and was not breathing when emergency personnel arrived. Three days after being admitted to the hospital, he passed away.

Foltz’s death was judged unintentional by the coroner’s office due to deadly alcohol consumption with a blood alcohol level of 0.35, which is more than four times the legal limit.

In 2022, the Foltz family sued the institution, requesting a minimum of $50,000 in damages.

The family will receive close to $3 million from the institution as part of the settlement, according to the Associated Press. This is in addition to the more than $7 million in payments that the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and individuals involved in the hazing made to Folz’s family, according to the Associated Press.

Eight former members of the fraternity who were engaged in the incident were accused of hazing, involuntary manslaughter, and tampering with evidence in Foltz’s death. They were all either found guilty or entered guilty pleas to a variety of offences, ranging from hazing to delivering alcohol to a juvenile to reckless homicide.

Bowling Green State University and Foltz’s family have stated that they will endeavour to address and put a stop to hazing on college campuses across the US as part of the settlement announced on Monday.

According to its website, the IamStoneFoltz foundation was established by Foltz’s parents with the goal of “educating both parents and kids about the perils of hazing.”

Since the incident, Bowling Green State University has recruited a coordinator to prevent hazing and put policies in place to make it simpler for students to report hazing to the institution. Additionally, Ohio established a new state law strengthening the criminal penalties for hazing.

According to the AP, the university also expelled Pi Kappa Alpha and said that it would never again be recognised on campus.

‘After he completed it we were told he was eligible by Mensa’s child advisor, so we thought he may as well join’.

‘We were a bit like “pardon?”. We knew he could do things his peers couldn’t, but I don’t think we realised quite how good he was.

She continued, “We’re not sure how he ended up this way, my husband and I are not linguists. We always joke the embryologist must have slipped a needle or something to make him this way”.

 

Beth acknowledged that Teddy’s brilliance presents some difficulties because he doesn’t seem to be interested in games or television.

She said: ‘My friends say, “Oh should we have some c-a-k-e?” and their kids will not know what they’re saying, but Teddy will immediately spell it out and want some’.

‘You can’t get anything past him, he listens to everything. He will remember the conversations you had with him at Christmas last year’.

‘When we had our daughter we bought him a tablet so we could focus on her, but he was never hugely interested in playing games or anything’.

‘He instead just likes to use apps to try and learn to count to 100 in Mandarin and other languages’.

Reciting his times’ tables while seated is his idea of enjoyment.

Despite his brilliance, Teddy’s parents are working to keep him “humble” in order to protect him from developing a “superiority complex”.

The toddler, who is now four years old, doesn’t seem to realise how talented he is in comparison to other kids his age.

Beth added: ‘His friends can read a couple of letters of the alphabet, meanwhile he can read Harry Potter’.

In his first tweet, he related how, as a young child, a stranger saved his life in a vehicle accident; all he knows about the man is that “he was wearing a silver HMT.” He explained how “Microsoft bailed out Google” at the Bali airport in another tweet. Both tweets have received a lot of attention and encouraged people to share their acts of kindness.

“When I was a kid, a stranger saved me from getting crushed by a reversing Ambassador car by lifting me up and putting me out of its way. All I know about him is he was wearing a silver HMT watch. What’s the kindest thing a complete stranger has done for you?” wrote Parminder Singh on Twitter.

“We are definitely living in a simulation @elonmusk! Happy National Hugging Day everyone,” Fidias tweeted on January 22. He shared a picture of himself with Musk hugging him.

Maye Musk, the mother of Elon Musk, was upset with Fidias when the YouTuber’s fans repeatedly posted spam comments on her Instagram account. Musk had only recently expressed interest and shown signs of being more receptive to the notion.

“Elon Musk is one of the most down to Earth human beings I’ve seen. He inspires me to be kind to everyone and to be a good human being,” Musk’s Twitter friend Pranay Pathole tweeted last year, along with a picture of himself and a child.

“The kids I talked to just had one request, which was to hug this guy who keeps trying to hug me in SF. I checked to see if they were sure about that and they were, so I will,” Musk replied.

Fidias had given up all hope when the unexpected occurred. Musk engaged in extensive socialising while watching a World Cup game in Qatar. This includes a youngster who pushed the YouTuber for a hug.
