On Saturday, author and head of the Censor Board Prasoon Joshi discussed the recent string of box office failures the Hindi film industry has created. He stated that instead of adopting a “victim mindset,” the film business must seek out solutions to overcome this downturn. He also discussed the reasons why the majority of Bollywood movies fail.

In general, the year 2022 has not been extremely prolific for the Hindi film industry. Many high-profile, high-budget movies have had disastrous box office results. This has occurred despite the fact that south Asian films have occasionally found success in the Hindi-speaking region. At this time, boycott requests have been made against numerous Hindi films. Many have speculated that Bollywood is “dead” as a result of this.
Speaking on Saturday at Sahitya Aaaj Tak 2022, Prasoon claimed that this was the result of the industry and its creators having lost touch with their roots. “There was a time when Bollywood films had stories taken from literature and mythology. These tales were connected to their roots. Then, at some point, Bollywood became self-congratulatory and went into a bubble. There are mainly only people from Mumbai here. Many have never seen a farmer in real life. But then they try to show farmers in films. They are cut off from their roots.”

He continued by saying that it was time to consider how things may be made better. “There is a need to do some introspection. It needs to do away with the victim mindset,” he added.
Writer and poet Prasoon Joshi has twice won the National Award for Best Lyrics. Additionally, he has written screenplays, most notably for the critically and financially successful 2014 Milkha Singh biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He took over as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which oversees the certification of all Indian films, in 2017 from Pahlaj Nihalani.
