Job openings in Australia flooded to all-time highs in the May quarter as firms battled to find staff in the midst of a fixing work market, another sign loan costs are probably going to rise further one week from now.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) out on Thursday showed openings in the three months to May bounced 13.8%, from the past quarter to 480,100.

That was 29.7% higher than a similar period last year, and over two times the level in February 2020 preceding the Covid pandemic previously hit.

“This reflected expanding interest for laborers, especially in client confronting jobs, with organizations proceeding to confront disturbances to their activities, as well as progressing work deficiencies,” said Bjorn Jarvis, head of work measurements at the ABS.
