Mercedes has debuted its biggest and most opulent electric vehicle to date. The Mercedes EQS is the company’s flagship electric vehicle and a battery-powered version of the Mercedes S-Class sedan.

Similar to the S-Class, the EQS is made to be spacious and comfortable. The EQS features a sloping hood and is evocative of cab-forward designs that were most common in the 1990s because a huge engine is not required. Its back end tapers more subtly as well. And as a result, according to Mercedes designers, the EQS is the most aerodynamically effective factory-produced passenger car in the world.

The EQS’s body automatically lowers at speeds over 75 mph, then significantly further at speeds over 100 mph, to aid in its ability to glide through the air even more effortlessly.

Using European testing guidelines as a guide, it is estimated that the automobile has a range of around 480 miles. (US government testing techniques typically produce lower range estimates.)

The EQS serves as a showcase for Mercedes’ most cutting-edge technologies, much like the S-Class does. For example, the doors open and close automatically, just like some Tesla cars. As the driver approaches, the door handles extend automatically, and the doors open as the vehicle comes closer. When the driver presses the brake, the door may also automatically close. The driver can also open the passenger doors to let passengers get in and out of the vehicle.

An optional touchscreen system is available inside the Mercedes EQS and spans the full dashboard from the driver’s side window to the passenger’s. There are actually three different screens—including one particularly for the passenger—beneath one enormous curved glass panel, but they appear to be one continuous surface.

The EQS will also be offered with a rectangular central touchscreen and the remainder of the dashboard covered in wood, leather, or other materials for clients who prefer a more conventional appearance.

Drivers can take a Power Nap during a rest stop thanks to a special programme offered by the EQS. It automatically closes the windows and the sunshade over the glass roof while reclining the driver’s seat into a resting position. To create a relaxing ambience, the interior temperature and lighting are also changed. The audio plays soothing music, while the dashboard screens display pictures of the starry sky. After a time, the car starts a wake-up routine that includes a light massage and unique revitalising scents.

The overhead sunshade opens as the seatback finally lifts.
Four-wheel steering is another feature available on the EQS, as well as on the S-Class sedan. The rear wheels turn somewhat in the opposite direction of the front wheels when travelling at moderate speeds. Because of this, a huge vehicle may make a turn in a considerably less area than it otherwise could. For more seamless lane changes at greater speeds, the rear wheels can spin in the same direction as the front.

The EQS will initially be available in two versions: the all-wheel-drive EQS 580, which has 516 horsepower, and the rear-wheel-drive EQS 450+, which has 329 horsepower. The EQS’s price has not yet been disclosed by Mercedes, but it is anticipated to exceed $100,000. The starting price of the S-Class with gasoline engines is little around $100,000. In the fall of this year, the EQS will become available in the US.
