The Copenhagen restaurant Noma, which has been awarded the world’s greatest on multiple occasions, lost money in 2021 for the first time in four years despite getting Covid-19 funding from the Danish government.
According to a report with the Danish Business Authority, the restaurant incurred a net loss of 1.69 million Danish kroner (about $240,000) in 2021 following a small profit in 2020. As Denmark imposed virus lockdowns for portions of the year, Noma earned 10,9 million kroner in government compensation.

Noma, which provides a vegetarian lunch menu with wine for approximately US$700 per person, is presently named No. 1 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, having achieved the top honour five times in total. Moreover, it has three Michelin stars.
The last time Noma was unprofitable was in 2017, when chef Rene Redzepi closed it for approximately a year to undergo renovations. In addition, the restaurant intends to temporarily close in Copenhagen at the end of this year and tour other cities before reopening in 2023.

“In the circumstances, the company’s result and economic development have been satisfying,” Noma said in its 2021 financial report. The corporation anticipates a better performance in the coming year.
