Pakistan’s growing solar market drives demand for battery storage

KARACHI: As Pakistan’s distributed solar market continues to expand, global solar technology company Trinasolar says the next stage of the country’s clean energy transition will depend on integrating battery energy storage systems (BESS) with existing industrial and commercial solar installations.

Pakistan has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing distributed solar markets, with an estimated 38 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity across residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors, according to research by Ember and Renewables First.

As this solar base grows, businesses are increasingly looking for ways to store renewable energy and use it more efficiently during periods of peak demand.

Trina Storage, Trinasolar’s battery energy storage division, said interest in solar-plus-storage solutions is rising, particularly in utility-scale projects and commercial and industrial (C&I) microgrids.

A report by Renewables First estimated that Pakistan imported 4.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage systems in 2025, marking a 220% year-on-year increase.

The company said integrating battery storage with existing solar systems requires detailed technical evaluation rather than a simple retrofit.

Factors including electrical infrastructure, inverter compatibility, demand patterns, energy management systems, safety standards and commercial objectives must be assessed to ensure reliable performance. For many projects, an AC-coupled design enables battery storage to operate alongside existing solar installations while preserving much of the original infrastructure.

Trinasolar said it is working with customers and engineering partners to evaluate system compatibility and develop battery storage solutions tailored to individual sites.

The company has supplied more than 500 megawatts of high-efficiency solar modules in Pakistan and recently introduced its Vertex N G3 760W series. Globally, its Trina Storage division expects cumulative battery storage shipments to exceed 30 GWh by the first half of 2026.

Edison Zhou, Head of Pakistan at Trinasolar, said Pakistan has already established a strong solar foundation and that the next step is integrating battery storage to make renewable electricity available under a wider range of operating conditions while improving operational flexibility and energy resilience.
