Vijay Varma responds to boycott and cancel culture
Vijay Varma is the most recent Bollywood celebrity to respond to the current boycott and cancellation culture directed against directors, performers, and films. Recently, Vijay appeared opposite Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, and Roshan Matthew in the film Darlings. He created a name for himself in the 2019 film Gully Boy with his minimal screen time. The actor’s realistic portrayal of an abusive and drunken spouse has earned him a great deal of acclaim from reviewers and the public. The actor, whose name is now in the news, has expressed his views on the boycott culture.
Vijay said that boycott culture has become “a little excessive” at this point. “It may frighten you. Now, it has gone a little too far. I believe that anything you stated ten years ago may have been offensive and raised a few eyebrows. It may have been a popular activity at the time, but it is no longer frowned upon now. I believe you cannot be terminated for such a reason.”
Vijay elaborated by saying, “For instance, I visit a home in Rajasthan where leopard and tiger skins are on display. When the home was likely constructed, it was commonplace to exhibit dead animal skins… Now we see how hazardous and awful this is for nature and animals. But the people of that period, a family that had displayed animal skins for four generations, lacked education. Can they be cancelled?”
He noted that it is essential to be well-educated and current, but that trends are always evolving. He remarked that comedians might be tormented by remarks made a decade earlier.
Vijay will next be featured in Sujoy Ghosh’s adaption of Devotion of Suspect X, which will also star Kareena Kapoor Khan and Jaedeep Ahlawat. He will also appear in Mirzapur’s third season.
