Doctor Who‘ is the forthcoming series on BBC, new photos have been made available by the series. The two pictures feature Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday), who will replace David Tennant as the Doctor, and Ncuti Gatwa (who will play the part).

The fresh photos of the Doctor and Ruby Sunday were released by BBC Studios on their Twitter account. The first photograph features the new lead, Gatwa (Sex Education), dressed in full costume, including an orange t-shirt, brown leather shoes, and a coat and pants with brown checks.

The new Doctor appears prepared to face whatever monsters the new season will present him with as he stands in front of a background of a sunset with his hands idly in his pockets.

The actor previously stated that he’d want to take on The Beast and The Weeping Angels. The Weeping Angels are a timeless classic and are very terrifying. Because the devil is the ultimate villain, I would adore a fight with The Beast.

You can’t get much more nasty than that, in my opinion, Gatwa stated. The second picture shows Gatwa and her Coronation Street co-star and friend Gibson, who will play Ruby Sunday. The two people in the photo are seen grinning at the camera while on set in front of a trailer.

In February, Gatwa was chosen to play the fourteenth Doctor (with an official announcement in May). Gatwa said in a BBC red carpet interview in May,“I’ve known [about having the role] since February of this year, so it’s been tricky trying to keep this under wraps because I’ve got a very big mouth,”

The Rwandan-Scottish actor Gatwa is the second person of colour to play the part after Jo Martin did it in the eleventh season. He will also carry on the series’ efforts to promote inclusivity and diversity by replacing Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor.

This character is a staple; it’s so iconic and significant to many people, including myself, he declared. “It makes everyone feel seen as well and they can enjoy it. I feel very grateful as well to have the baton handed over and I’m going to try to do my best.”

Gatwa and Gibson have already shown their delight in working together, as seen in their calm and contented poses in the second picture.

Gatwa gave his co-star the following written compliments:

“Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent,”

“This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!”  the actor continued.

In a similar vein, Gibson also mentioned in her official statement how thrilled she was to work with Gatwa.“It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have traveled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

British science-fiction programme Doctor Who, which debuted in 1963 and was brought back in 2015, follows the exploits of an extraterrestrial Time Lord known as the Doctor.

The Doctor, who regenerates whenever he sustains a serious injury, travels through time in the TARDIS while posing as a blue British police car in order to fight evil and save the world. There have been fourteen actors to play the enduring role since William Hartnell.

After Tennant makes his final appearance, Gatwa will take over as the Doctor over the holiday season of the following year.

Tennant, who portrayed the Tenth Doctor in the contemporary incarnation of the series, shocked viewers by making an unexpected appearance in October, following Whittaker’s regeneration. In the Christmas special of the following year, Tennant will make his final appearance as the 14th Doctor.

A 60th anniversary special of Doctor Who will air on Disney+ globally and BBC one in the UK in 2023.
