King Charles III and Queen Camilla will have a sporty start to the weekend.
On Friday, the senior royals went to Wrexham Association Football Club in Wrexham, North Wales, to learn more about how Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who bought the soccer club in 2021, plan to improve it.
Local officials showed the royal couple around the Racecourse Ground stadium, and they walked through the Player’s Tunnel to get a real feel for the place.
Then, they met Wrexham executives Fleur Robinson and Humphrey Kerr. Reynolds, 46, and McElhenney, 45, walked them onto the field. According to FX, the American actors bought the Welsh soccer club in February 2021. They wanted to take the “historic but struggling” fifth-tier team to the next level. Welcome to Wrexham, a docuseries was based on the ambitious purchase. Season one premiered on Hulu in August.
The King, who is 74, and the Queen Consort, who is 75, probably talked to the co-chairman about Wrexham’s long and interesting past. The team was founded in 1864 and is still known as the oldest football club in Wales and the third-oldest professional team in the world. Wrexham has also won the Welsh World Cup a record 23 times. The Racecourse Ground is the oldest international stadium in the world that still hosts international games.
After spending time with the stars, King Charles and Queen Camilla met with the First, Women’s, and Youth Teams from Wrexham and posed for a photo with them. They went up the stairs of the Macron Stand and met people from Wrexham AFC, such as coaches, doctors, office workers, and more. The royal couple went with Strategic Advisor Shaun Harvey to talk to contractors and architects on the job site to learn more about how the club is being built.
King Charles finished the stop by going to the 1864 Suite and talking to Kerry Evans, the Disabled Liaison Officer for Wrexham AFC, and Power Chair users. The queen also took time to talk to former Wrexham soccer players, teammates, and longtime fans of the Welsh soccer club.
