German director Edward Berger gears up for new Netflix series
Netflix Following the Oscar success of his previous film, All Quiet on the Western Front, director Edward Berger is preparing to helm a spy-drama based on the Simon Riske novel series by Christopher Reich.
According to sources who spoke with Deadline, the Oscar-winning producer, co-writer, and director is presently at work on an international spy-thriller drama series adaptation for Netflix UK.
The first season of the thriller drama, which is currently in early development, will reportedly be based on The Take, the first novel in the series written by Rowan Joffe.
The report has not yet been verified or denied by Netflix. Co-producing the Simon Riske television series will be eOne and See-Saw Productions.
The Take centers on Simon Riske, a free-lance industrial spy who operates a London auto repair shop and becomes engaged in the investigation of a stolen letter that has the potential to upset the Western world’s power structure.
All Quiet on the Western Front by Berger was nominated for 9 Oscars and won 4 of them, including Best International Feature Film. This was a record-breaking haul for a German picture.
Berger also won for Best Direction at the BAFTAs where All Quiet took top categories, including Best Film, Best Film Not the English Language and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Additionally, he received a BAFTA in 2019 for his contributions to the TV drama Patrick Melrose.
His other television roles include Deutschland ’83, The Terror, and Your Honor. In addition, Berger recently agreed to direct and executive produce Helltown, an Amazon Studios crime-thriller drama.
The Take, the first novel in Reich’s Simon Riske series, was published in 2018. Crown Jewel (2019), The Castle (2020), and Once a Thief are also included (2022).
