Satish Kaushik’s legendary film roles range from Mr. India’s Calendar to Pappu Pager
Satish Kaushik, a seasoned actor and filmmaker who portrayed endearing characters like Calendar in Mr. India and Pappu Pager in Deewana Mastana, passed away on Thursday in Delhi. He was 67. Early in the 1980s, Satish started his cinematic career. Over the years, he has won numerous honors and won over the public with his humorous timing. Satish, who was raised in Haryana, graduated from both the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune and the National School of Theatre in Delhi.
Satish wore many hats – he was a director, producer, theatre actor, film actor, comedian, and screenwriter. But he carved a niche for himself as one of the best-known comic actors in Bollywood. He acted in films such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Jamai Raja, Saajan Chal Saural, Chal Mere Bhai, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, Brick Lane, and Udta Punjab. Ashok in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)
Satish was portrayed as Ashok Namboodirippad, a subordinate of Tarneja, a crooked contractor played by Pankaj Kapur, who kills D’Mello, a municipal commissioner played by Satish Shah. While the film is entertaining, one specific telephone conversation between Satish and Vinod Mehra, played by Naseeruddin Shah, is plain funny.
Calendar in Mr India (1987)
One of the most memorable lines from the Shekhar Kapur-directed movie featuring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi was “Calendar khana do (give us food)”. One of Satish’s most well-known roles in his acting career was that of Calendar, the cook.
Kashiram in Ram Lakhan (1989)
Ram Lakhan, which was directed by Subhash Ghai, featured a large ensemble cast, including Jackie Shroff, Dimple Kapadia, Madhuri Dixit, and Amrish Puri in the key parts. One of the funniest comedy duos in Indian film included Satish as Kashiram and Anupam Kher as Devdhar.
