Renowned Pakistani actress Sarwat Gilani recently opened up about her challenging experience with postpartum depression, revealing deeply personal struggles, including distressing thoughts about harming her newborn daughter.
In a heartfelt interview on a private TV channel’s morning show, Sarwat candidly shared her journey, noting that while she didn’t face postpartum depression after the births of her two sons and was unaware of its severity, she encountered severe symptoms following the birth of her daughter.
Describing a poignant moment four days after delivery, Sarwat recounted being separated from her newborn due to surgeries, feeling overwhelmed by uncontrollable tears and distressing thoughts. She confided in her husband about her frightening urge to harm their daughter to alleviate her anguish.
“I was crying uncontrollably and told my husband that I wanted to harm our daughter to stop all the tension,” she tearfully recounted.
Reflecting on the lack of information available during her first pregnancy, Sarwat emphasized the psychological challenges women face, often seeking guidance from books and social media. She underscored the critical role of family support during pregnancy, highlighting how her husband’s reassurance and understanding about postpartum depression brought her comfort during a difficult time.
“It’s crucial for everyone to understand this condition,” Sarwat emphasized, advocating for greater awareness of postpartum depression among men and women alike.
Postpartum depression, characterized by feelings of restlessness and despair, affects mothers after childbirth, highlighting the importance of mental health support during and after pregnancy.
Sarwat Gilani married actor and renowned plastic surgeon Fahad Mirza in 2014. The couple has two sons and a daughter. Their eldest son, Rohan Mirza, was born in 2015, their younger son, Ariz Muhammad Mirza, in 2017, and their daughter in December 2023.
