TORONTO: Billie Eilish is entering a new phase of her career as the Grammy and Oscar-winning singer makes her feature film debut in “The Bell Jar,” with first-look photos showing her transformation into the main character Esther Greenwood.
The singer was seen filming in Toronto for director Sarah Polley’s adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s classic 1963 novel. The released set images show Eilish with a completely different appearance from her usual music style. She appeared with auburn brown hair, bold red lipstick and elegant fashion inspired by the 1950s era, creating the look of a young woman living in the mid 20th century.
In one scene, Eilish was photographed walking through a recreated New York City street while wearing a red knit sweater as part of the film’s vintage setting. The production aims to capture the atmosphere and style of the period in which Plath’s novel takes place.
“The Bell Jar” follows Esther Greenwood, a talented young woman who struggles with ambition, personal identity and mental health challenges while beginning her career through a prestigious magazine internship. The story explores her experiences as she searches for direction and purpose in life.

Although “The Bell Jar” marks Eilish’s first major feature film role, it is not her first appearance on screen. She previously acted in the Prime Video series “Swarm” in 2023, where she took on a supporting role.
Eilish’s move into acting comes after a successful music career that has earned her worldwide recognition. She and her brother Finneas have won two Academy Awards for their songs “No Time to Die” and “What Was I Made For?”
“The Bell Jar’ is expected to attract attention from both film audiences and Eilish’s global fan base as the project moves closer to release.
