The 22-year-old finds dating challenging, and Jazz Jennings is no exception. The transgender rights advocate is sharing with the media how recently she has been pushing herself to explore her sexuality in front of the new season of I Am Jazz.
“Dating is really, really hard,” acknowledges Jennings. “But in this season, you’ll see me kind of stepping outside of my comfort zone and be like, ‘OK, I’m ready to find love.'”
She continues, “I downloaded dating apps, which mom wasn’t really fond of. So you’ll see a little bit of that, our relationship with that. I definitely explore my sexuality. I definitely date people this season and there’s going to be a lot of that.”
In fact, the Harvard student confesses that she will be going on her first date in four years in the season preview clip.
My love life, where I’m headed with it, and whether or not I find love are some of the biggest stories. According to Jennings, the new season.
She continues, “All those queries will be addressed.
In addition, Jennings must deal with the challenges of dating while transgender, as if putting oneself out there as a young adult wasn’t challenging enough.
“I wish people understood that dating as a Trans person is really hard because transgender people are immediately judged and ostracized for who they are,” she says.
When it comes to understanding the Trans dating experience, Jennings says she wants people could be more “empathetic and accepting, and kind.” Being a transgender woman is merely one aspect of a much richer identity; it does not entirely define her.
“I wish people could be like, ‘You know what? I don’t care that you’re transgender. You’re just a woman to me. You’re beautiful. And I see that in you,'” she says of the “litmus test” her potential partners must pass. “And, yeah, one of the people that I date on the show, they express that, that they accept me for being a woman.”
In the new season, Jennings also examines another rite of women that is more superficial than her emotional journey.
She gets a bikini wax for the first time, which she describes as a “momentous” occasion for her “new vagine.”
As the aesthetician applies the hot liquid, Jennings prepares herself like so many women before her, remarking, “The wax is palpable. I’m aware of it!” She soon becomes formally ready for a date.
