The future of certain previously confirmed projects is frequently called into question at the slightest suspicion in a time when media franchises are going through seismic shakeups. Fans of the cult superhero movie Constantine recently experienced this. When Warner Bros. just announced the sequel and the return of Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, fans had every reason to believe that the long-anticipated sequel was finally occurring.

However, fans immediately noticed that the Constantine sequel was missing from the list when James Gunn and Peter Safran recently unveiled their highly anticipated slate of projects in development as they look to reshape the DC Universe. This led them to speculate that the movie may have suffered the same fate as recently shelved projects like Batgirl.

Several theories about what might have transpired rapidly flooded the internet. One of these incorrect assumptions was that the Constantine sequel had been cancelled. A well-known industry source had openly tweeted that the sequel would not be taking place, which enraged fans and left them waiting impatiently for an official statement from DC’s management. The sequel is still a part of Gunn and Safran’s plan, according to Entertainment Weekly, which also received confirmation from a Warner Bros. representative that everything is still going according to schedule for the eagerly awaited follow-up.

According to Gunn, the first chapter of the DCU’s new future will be introduced by the ‘Gods and Monsters’-themed DC Studios productions, which will consist of five films and five television shows. The Flash will act as a reset button to remove unnecessary storylines and bring the franchise back to Gunn and Safran’s original intent.

The universe will however continue to function as a multiverse, with other endeavors falling under the “Elseworlds” umbrella. It is likely that the Constantine sequel will fall under this category as well, given that it is not a part of the main canon of projects, along with Todd Phillips’ Joker franchise, Matt Reeves’ BatVerse, and Teen Titans GO! Given that The Swamp Thing is part of the “Gods and Monsters” lineup and since Gunn and Safran are clearly interested in the darker aspects of the DC Universe, it is possible that these two well-known horror icons will cross paths.
