The horror genre is off to another gruesome start in 2023. While most fans of the genre are presently focused on Ghostface’s revival, April will see the return of another venerable franchise. This is the Evil Dead from the film with the same name, Evil Dead Rising. The promotion for the movie has been building quietly, with Rise’s wacky first trailer promising yet another bloody installment of this hugely successful horror franchise. Now that the movie’s release date is less than two months away, we are aware of the length of writer-director Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise: 96 minutes.

Although that would appear brief in the context of contemporary cinema, Rise would really be the longest installment in the series. Army of Darkness ran for 81 minutes, The Evil Dead II for 84 minutes, The Evil Dead (2013) for 91 minutes. The original The Evil Dead ran for 85 minutes. Rise is also on the shorter end of the scary range when compared to other recent hits in the modern horror genre.

It took 111 minutes for Halloween Ends, 138 minutes for Terrifier 2, 103 minutes for The Black Phone, and 114 minutes for Scream 2022. Rise’s shorter running time can be viewed as refreshing as a result. A movie should only go as long as the plot warrants, and the Evil Dead series has a reputation for being time-efficient. You sit down, take in some disturbing visuals and visually stunning realistic gore, and then, like a fun roller coaster trip, it’s done.

What is the plot of Evil Dead Rise?

Having said that, Rise’s story aims to go further with the thematically gruesome familial elements that were eerily present in the 2013 version. This will be the first movie since Army of Darkness to center on a dysfunctional family residing in a high rise in Los Angeles instead of the horror franchise’s traditional cabin in the woods setting. Hence, the title’s rising component.

Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan’s characters, two estranged sisters named Elle and Beth, will be the main focus of the narrative. Elle has kids, which will undoubtedly heighten the terror in this movie. Who knows how the Necronomicon ended up in Los Angeles, but if the newest teaser is any indicator, Rise appears to be the franchise’s deadliest entry. Given the traumatic and unforgettable gruesome images of Evil Dead 2013, it is saying a lot.

One of the few horror series with just high-quality installments is Evil Dead. The variety seen in this undead franchise is astounding, from the campy terror of Sam Raimi’s initial movie to the horror comedies of Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness to the dark terror of Evil Dead 2013. Rising will push the boundaries of Evil Dead in some incredibly interesting ways because of Raimi and previous actor Bruce Campbell’s continued engagement in the series.
