On March 14, Pi Day, director Darren Aronofsky’s groundbreaking debut film will get a special 25th-anniversary theatre run. The movie, which has been remastered by A24, will only be shown in IMAX theatres.

A24 has acquired the rights to Aronofsky’s 1998 feature debut, which is now competing for this year’s Oscars with his most recent film, The Whale. A live Q&A from Los Angeles with director Darren Aronofsky and several cast and crew members from the 1998 film, including cinematographer Matthew Libatique, composer Clint Mansell, star Sean Gullette, and other special guests, will take place before the restored film’s 6:30 PM IMAX screening on March 14.

When Pi debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998, it was unlike anything else in theatres. Pi was filmed in high-contrast black and white on the streets of New York City. The movie, which had a meager budget of less than $150,000, stars Gullette (Requiem for a Dream, Rock the Casbah) as obsessive mathematician Max Cohen, whose discovery of an enigmatic 216-digit number puts him at odds with a sinister conspiracy, his own body, and the wrath of God – or, perhaps, just his sanity.

The movie, which also starred Samia Shoaib (The Object of My Love, The Sixth Sense), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America, Royal Pains), and Mark Margolis (Scarface, Breaking Bad), was well received by critics and more than paid for itself even with a modest theatrical release. It later developed into a cult favorite and served as the impetus for Aronofsky’s prosperous filmmaking career.

An Outstanding Career Has Been Crafted by Darren Aronofsky

Before finding mainstream popularity with the 2008 Mickey Rourke squared circle film The Wrestler, Aronofsky made the heartbreaking addiction drama Requiem for a Dream and the whimsical The Fountain. His next project, the psychological horror movie Black Swan, brought him his first (and sole) Oscar nomination for Best Director. His subsequent movie, the Biblical drama Noah, was quite successful at the box office, but his subsequent movie, the allegorical mother! Jennifer Lawrence caused controversy among both reviewers and viewers.

Brendan Fraser, who plays the lead role in his most recent film The Whale, is vying for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards. Aronofsky’s record of unfinished projects is almost as long as his filmography; among his close calls are a Robocop remake, a Ronin adaptation, and a Batman: Year One adaptation.
