Hollywood mourns the loss of Robert Duvall, the cinematic titan renowned for his powerhouse performances in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and a multitude of other iconic films.
Duvall passed away peacefully at the age of 95, as confirmed by his wife, Luciana, in a moving statement shared on Facebook on Monday, February 16.
“Yesterday, we bid farewell to my beloved husband, treasured friend, and one of the finest actors of our time,” Luciana wrote. “Bob departed peacefully at home, enveloped by love and comfort.”
“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, director, and masterful storyteller. To me, he was everything,” she added. “His devotion to his craft was rivaled only by his passion for characters, a great meal, and celebrating life’s moments. Every role he embodied radiated authenticity, leaving a profound, lasting imprint on audiences worldwide.”
Born in San Diego, California, in 1931, Duvall launched his career on stage, earning an Obie Award for A View from the Bridge in 1965, before making his Broadway debut in Wait Until Dark a year later.
He transitioned seamlessly to film with standout roles in Bullitt, True Grit, MASH, and THX 1138, ultimately gaining critical acclaim and his first Oscar nomination as Tom Hagen in The Godfather (1972), a role that would define his early legacy.
Over a remarkable five-decade career, Duvall received seven Academy Award nominations, winning Best Actor in 1983 for his moving portrayal of a recovering country singer in Tender Mercies.
His unforgettable performances spanned from the fearless Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979) to complex roles in The Great Santini (1980) and The Apostle (1997). Supporting Actor nods included A Civil Action (1998) and The Judge (2014).
