Crown Princess Mette-Marit made her first public appearance after lung transplant

Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

As Norway celebrated its upset victory against Brazil in the World Cup round of 16, the Norwegian royal family joined in the celebrations, including Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who underwent a lung transplant last month.

In a series of photos shared on the Norwegian royal family’s official social media accounts, the royals wrote, translated from Norwegian: “Yesterday was a historic night! The whole family watched with excitement! The Royal Couple from MÃ¥gerø, the Crown Prince Couple from the Palace, and Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus at the stadium in the USA. Congratulations to the national team, the support staff and Norway on this fantastic achievement!”

The first photo, showing Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is especially significant because it is the first public image of the crown princess since her lung transplant. Another photo shows the couple looking out a window, likely watching the celebrations. Prince Haakon later joined fans celebrating in Palace Square in Oslo.

Although the post says Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were at the Royal Palace in Oslo, Mette-Marit remains hospitalized. The royal family has previously said no further updates on her health will be provided until she is discharged from the hospital.

“As we have communicated previously, we will inform you about it when the Crown Princess is discharged from the hospital. For now, she is not,” Royal Court communications adviser Liv Anette Luane told NRK.

Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, attended the match in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The royal siblings posed for a photo before the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match between Brazil and Norway at New York/New Jersey Stadium.

After Norway’s victory, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus visited the team in the locker room and congratulated star striker Erling Haaland.

“I wish I was on those streets; I wish I was involved in it,” Haaland said about the celebrations in Norway. “Everyone has to enjoy themselves. All of Norway has to enjoy themselves. It’s one of the sickest days ever in Norwegian history. You just have to enjoy it, because this is sick.”
