World Food Day is being observed on 16th October (today) across the globe.

According to the details, every year since 1979, October 16 is celebrated as the ‘World Day of Food’ all over the world including Pakistan.

Observance of this day is aimed at promoting worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a United Nations subsidiary that hosts various events and seminars around the world on this day.

FAO named this year’s theme as “Our Actions Are Our Future”.

According to FAO officials, this theme aims to raise awareness around healthy food use and maximum avoidance of junk food around the world.

Inequitable distribution of resources around the world, civil war in different countries and millions of people in drought-prone areas suffer from food shortages.

The situation of migrants coming to Bangladesh, especially from Yemen, Syria, and Myanmar, is worse.

According to a recent report by FAO, at least 82 million people worldwide suffer from hunger and poverty.

Whereas, at least 67 million adults and 16 million children suffer from obesity worldwide due to food shortage, FAO said.

Talking about Pakistan, the Thar district in Sindh has been in the headlines globally in terms of malnutrition.

Thousands of pregnant women suffers from malnutrition.

The majority of babies treated at hospitals are whose birth weight is up to one kilogram.

These children do not survive and die while gaining weight.

To reduce the ratio of deaths, their mothers during pregnancy needs a proper nutrition and diet, according to the doctors.

For the past few years, despite the deaths of thousands of children, governments have not taken any concrete steps for the nutrition of pregnant women.
