After a lengthy hiatus of three and a half years, Stranger Things has triumphantly returned with its fifth and final season. Even just two episodes in, a seemingly minor character from the series’ earliest chapter is emerging as a central figure poised to shape the season’s defining storyline.

In Season 5’s second episode, the menacing Demogorgon breaches Hawkins, abducting Holly Wheeler (portrayed by Nell Fisher, taking over from twins Anniston and Tinsley Price) after brutally injuring her parents, Karen (Kara Buono) and Ted Wheeler (Joe Chrest).

Holly, the younger sister of Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer), becomes the key to the unfolding events. The episode’s credit reveals its title as “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler”, a clear nod to the series’ premiere, “The Vanishing of Will Byers”.

The season is set on November 3, 1987 just three days before the four-year anniversary of Will’s disappearance. Following the events of Season 4, with the rifts to the Upside Down left open, Hawkins remains under strict military quarantine.

Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton), head of the government operation, is relentlessly hunting Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Yet the true threat lurks in the shadows: Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), hiding in the Upside Down, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

In the premiere, Holly tells Mike about her imaginary friend, “Mr. Whatsit,” who she claims is protecting her from Hawkins’ creatures.

However, Episode 2 reveals the chilling truth: Mr. Whatsit is actually Vecna in human form Henry Creel and his intentions are sinister. He is plotting to pull other Hawkins children into his mental lair, where Holly is to be joined, further entangling the town’s youngsters in his dark web.

When Will realizes that his visions allow him to perceive Vecna’s targets through the Upside Down hive mind, the group devises a plan. They attach a tracker to the Demogorgon’s next victim, young Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly), to trace the creature back to Vecna’s hidden lair and rescue Holly.

Holly’s role promises to grow even more pivotal. In Episode 1, Mike gifts her the “Holly the Heroic” Dungeons & Dragons figurine, a cleric with divine powers capable of protective spells and dimension doors. This could foreshadow Holly awakening latent abilities connected to the Upside Down, similar to Will.

By the end of Episode 3, she discovers that Max (Sadie Sink) is trapped in Vecna’s mindscape, giving Holly an experienced ally to guide her as she learns to harness her full potential.

The first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 are now available for streaming. Volume 2, featuring Episodes 5–7, is set to release on December 25, with the extended finale arriving on December 31, promising a high-stakes conclusion to a series that has captivated audiences worldwide.
