Dhaka: More than 1,000 students and activists on Monday linked their hands, chanted slogans and marched through Bangladesh’s main public university after a second-year student was raped, BOL News learnt.

According to the police, The protesters gathered on the campus in Dhaka, the capital, after the victim was rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight Sunday.

Protesters in Dhaka called for the arrest of whoever was responsible for the rape and for greater female safety in general.

Kazi Sahan Haque, police chief at Kurmitola Police Station, said authorities recorded a case filed by the victim’s father and were investigating.

A report says that in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority conservative nation of 160 million people, women regularly face various forms of harassment including rape and tortures. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, a network of women groups, said it recorded 697 rape cases in 2018 and 592 cases in the first half of 2019.

India: Teen girl raped and set ablaze by her uncle

Earlier in December, An 18-year-old girl was set ablaze after being raped by her own paternal uncle in India’s Fatehpur district.

According to Police officials, the victim said in a statement that she was alone in her home on Saturday noon, her 22-year-old raped her amid she started screaming, her uncle her uncle sprinkled kerosene on her and set her on fire.

The girl has been shifted to Hallet hospital in Kanpur for treatment, the official added.
