Russia’s government has resigned after President Vladimir Putin had proposed constitutional changes that could extend his stay in power.

Power will be transferred to the parliament from the presidency if the public approves the proposal.

Note that Vladimir Putin would complete his tenure in 2024. However, this new step can let him hold power behind the scenes.

Putin had explained his changes while addressing lawmakers in his annual state. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev declared that the government has resigned.

However, Russian government ministers were unaware of the resignation, according to international news sources.

The Russian leader addressed both chambers of the parliament in which he said that they would collect nationwide vote on proposed changes.

Apart from that, Putin has also proposed increasing the responsibilities of the State Council. He declared the council as “highly effective”.

He presented other proposals as well, including limitation of the supremacy of international law, changing the regulation that restricts the president to two consecutive terms, and strengthening rules that restrict presidential candidates who own foreign residency permits.

Russian Prime Minister announced an international television show.

“These changes, when they are adopted… will introduce substantial changes not only to an entire range of articles of the constitution but also to the entire balance of power, the power of the executive, the power of the legislature, the power of the judiciary,”

“In this context… the government in its current form has resigned.”
