US’s top health official says that the US “could have saved lives” if it had launched protective measures earlier to stop the spread.

Health official Dr. Anthony Fauci said to the international news agency, “If we had, right from the beginning, shut everything down, it may have been a little bit different,” However, he also said making that decision had been difficult.

He also said that several areas of the US could start becoming normal as early as May.

Dr. Fauci has also said that health officials could only suggest from a “pure health standpoint” when he was asked about the report published in the international news agency that he had recommended aggressive mitigation.

“Often, the recommendation is taken. Sometimes, it’s not. But it is what it is, we are where we are right now.”

He added, “no one is going to deny” that logically, earlier mitigation could have saved lives.

But he said, “what goes into those kinds of decisions is complicated”.

“There was a lot of pushback about shutting things down back then.”

“You don’t want to do something precipitously,” “It’s going to be depending on where you are in the country, the nature of the outbreak you already experienced and the threat of an outbreak you may not have experienced.”

On the other hand, international reports suggest that President Donald Trump had mishandled the US’s response to the pandemic.
