Six French people have been killed as gunmen attacked a group of aid workers in Niger. Officials said that men killed included citizens, their local guide, and the driver.

The incident had happened at 11:30 local time, east of Koure. It is not yet clear who was responsible for the attack. The governor of the Tillabéri region, Tidjani Ibrahim, told the French news agency that the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and opened fire.

French Presidency has confirmed the casualties of French citizens.

They were in the Koure, a region where tourists want to see the last herds of giraffe in West Africa. Niger’s defense minister Issoufou Katambé told Reuters that the French citizens served an international aid group. Officials had called them tourists.

ACTED, a French humanitarian NGO said that its staff members were involved in the incident. French President Emmanuel Macron had talked to his Niger counterpart on Mahamadou Issoufou on phone.
