MOSCOW: As Russia’s military campaign in its pro-Western neighbour approaches its third month, an armaments storage in a Russian hamlet near the Ukrainian border caught fire on Wednesday, according to the local governor.

The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region announced on Telegram that “According to preliminary information, an ammunition depot is on fire near the village of Staraya Nelidovka,” which is about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

According to Vyacheslav Gladkov, the fire was put out, and no citizens were injured or residential buildings damaged.

The cause of the fire remained unknown at the time.

Separately, the governors of the neighbouring regions of Kursk and Voronezh, which are also close to Ukraine’s border, reported air defence systems being activated throughout the night.

Kursk governor Roman Starovoyt stated on Telegram, while Voronezh region governor Alexander Gusev stated that their air defence system “successfully destroyed” a tiny reconnaissance drone.

The governor did not specify where the drone originated.

Russia has regularly accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out attacks on its territory, saying that in reaction, Moscow’s forces will increase attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.
