Residents of Shanghai who have been restricted to their houses for two weeks have initiated little “riots” to express their anger with China’s rigorous “COVID-zero” policy.

Since March 28, the city has been under lockdown, and people have reported being unable to get basic supplies due to supermarket closures and delivery restrictions.

However, images of escalating civil unrest have recently surfaced on Chinese social media and Twitter.

A massive crowd confronts security personnel in protective suits at the entrance to a residential complex in strict lockdown, shouting “give over the supplies,” as shown in many videos.

A Weibo user, Yaya, posted that there had been riots in nearby neighborhoods.

She said it was only where people protested that they received food.

“It’s so ridiculous,” she said. “My husband and I have been fighting for vegetables online for some days.

“Today, we can’t even buy anything from the [online store]”

While the Shanghai government is giving food, many people, notably in Songjiang District’s Jiuting district, have complained that supplies are insufficient.

In the current outbreak, Jiuting has been one of the regions with the most cases.

“[Jiuting] people can only rely on each other,” said one Weibo user.

“Ten days into isolation, countless money and time spent on surviving.

“Other districts have received food supplies, only we are living on our own.”

Because they were not allowed to leave their buildings, residents have resorted to group grocery shopping.

Some people said that, as soon as they went to the grocery shopping app, the day’s orders were already filled.

The sound of cries and yells resonates between residential buildings in a footage of that night.
