DUBLIN: Irish foreign and defence minister will arrive in Ukraine on Thursday when he will meet with his two Ukrainian colleagues, his office said.

Foreign Minister Simon Coveney is the first non-permanent UN Security Council member to visit Kyiv since Russia’s invasion.

Talks will focus on “how Ireland can continue to provide political and humanitarian support to Ukraine,” according to a statement from the Foreign and Defense Ministers.

The ministers will also discuss how Ireland can “assist Ukraine in its application for EU candidate status, take forward further EU sanctions on Russia and hold Russia to account for its brutal and unjustified invasion.”

According to the statement, Coveney would also “visit areas directly affected by the Russian invasion.

20 million euros in aid and 33 million euros in non-lethal support to Ukrainian forces have already been donated by Ireland to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees.
