Toght, Russia’s flagship Navy warship was hauled into port, a massive embarrassment for Vladimir Putin’s military force.

Explosions on board the 12,500-tonne Moskva, allegedly triggered by two Ukrainian attacks, killed up to 300 sailors and prompted its evacuation.

The cruiser was formerly the pride of Russia’s Black Sea navy, which Putin displayed to international leaders during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

It is a big setback for the invading force’s hopes of isolating Ukraine from its coast by seizing the port city of Odessa.

According to a Ukrainian source, the strike was the most devastating to the Russian fleet since World War II.

Western military authorities say it is the first time a cruiser of this size has been hit so hard since the General Belgrano was sunk during the Falkland War in 1982.

Analysts believe the sight of the 510-crew warship being repaired in the Crimean city of Sevastopol might enrage the Kremlin tyrant.

Ukraine’s Southern Military Command said it hit the 43-year-old ship late Wednesday, 60 miles off the coast of Odessa, causing it to catch fire. Rescue vessels were impeded by bursting munitions and bad weather.

After travelling in predictable patterns into range of Ukraine’s coastal batteries, the ship was dubbed a “sitting duck.”

According to Western military sources, the loss has harmed “Russian pride in their force.”

“Whether it’s due to incompetence on board or an attack by Ukrainian forces, it’s a huge blow for Russian credibility,” they stated.

“Either they’ve been vulnerable to an attack – and that questions their competence – or they have had a fire on board a capital ship which has resulted in the detonation of its magazine– and that’s just another bit of incompetence.”

According to US Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby, the ship is still afloat and “functioning under her own power.”

He stated that they were unable to validate Ukraine’s assertion that two Neptune anti-ship missiles had struck it. “From the photographs, it appears to have been a rather large explosion as well.” “We have no idea what triggered the explosion,” he stated.

Russia stated that the explosion was caused by an on-board fire that ignited munitions stockpiles.

The Moskva is claimed to have strong radar arrays for guiding its anti-ship, anti-air, and anti-submarine missiles.

According to sources connected to Russia’s private military Wagner company, drones may have been employed to divert radar or as spotters. The Moskva, according to the same Russian military sources, was struck twice on its port side, forcing it to flip over and catch fire. There has been no official confirmation of fatalities.

According to Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian government consultant, “in circumstances of an explosion of munitions aboard such a huge ship, between a quarter and half of the crew perishes.”

According to a defence officer, Russia’s air force is “terrified” of flying above Ukraine in disputed airspace. Experts were taken aback by the Kremlin’s early inability to win air supremacy.

It comes as the US said that it is deploying more than 40,000 artillery rounds, towed howitzers, armoured vehicles, and helicopters to Ukraine in response to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appeal for assistance. Canada has stated that it will send up to 150 military men to Poland. More than half of the nearly 4.5 million people who have evacuated since the invasion began in late February have gone to neighbouring countries.
