In a disturbing warning to Vladimir Putin, a US nuclear bomber was sighted flying close the Russian border.
The threat comes after the Russian despot allegedly dispatched bombers equipped with nuclear weapons to Sweden, but they were intercepted by fighter fighters.
The B-52H Stratofortress took off from Cotswold Airport today, according to Flightradar data.
According to Swedish media, four of Vladimir Putin’s aeroplanes flew in over the Baltic near the island of Gotland yesterday.
According to TV4, Expressen, and Aftonbladet, the formation consisted of two Sukhoi Su-24 bombers and two Sukhoi Su-27 fighters.
The bombers, as seen in the images with the single stabiliser tails, were said to be armed with nukes.
Despite significant coverage in Sweden, Stockholm’s military has yet to acknowledge the occurrence.
During the incident on March 2, the aeroplanes took off from a Russian airstrip in the enclave of Kaliningrad.
According to TV4, the action is seen to be an intentional attempt to scare Sweden.
Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters were dispatched to intercept the planes, which remained in their area for almost one minute.
Stockholm verified the intercept earlier last month, but allegations of the planes being armed with nukes have just recently surfaced.
Su-24s are supersonic two-seater attack aircraft that have been in service since before the Soviet Union’s demise.
Both Russia and Ukraine have utilised the aircraft in the present conflict.
According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Russia is believed to have at least 500 nuclear warheads ready for use by its bombers.
When approached by TV4, the Swedish Armed Forces declined to comment on the issue.
“The Russian breach of Swedish airspace is of course extremely unacceptable,” stated defence minister Peter Hultqvist at the time of the invasion.
“It will lead to a firm diplomatic response from Sweden. Swedish sovereignty and territory must always be respected.”
The military said they were taking the incident “very seriously” and branded the incursion as “unprofessional and irresponsible”.
Air Force Chief Carl-Johan Edström added: “This is an unprofessional and irresponsible action on the part of Russia,”
Sweden was participating in military training with neighbouring Finland at the time.
Neither nation is a Nato member.
The airspace intrusion also occurred just after Sweden vowed to deploy military help to Ukraine, including 5,000 anti-tank weaponry.
Sweden deployed weaponry to any country at war for the first time since 1939.
Former lieutenant colonel Jörgen Elfving told Aftonbladet that the episode raised issues about Sweden’s membership in Nato.
“If you suddenly have a weapon system that can transport nuclear warheads and do so, that is not an everyday occurrence,” he remarked.
“No one handles nuclear weapons, and it is not a normal thing.”
According to the retired officer, such an incidence has not occurred since the Cold War.
Russian planes were previously alleged to be carrying nuclear bombs while training near Western nations.
In 2015, it was revealed that Putin’s jets had been hauling nukes near the UK on at least two times.
According to a Western intelligence officer, Vladimir Putin believes his military has “misled” him and has lost trust in his senior officials.
According to a US official, the Russian president has not been informed of the entire magnitude of his military losses because his advisors are “too terrified to tell him the truth.”
At least two Russian attacks targeted a Red Cross facility in Mariupol during the most recent conflict.
Maxar Technologies satellite photographs reveal that the facility, which had a prominent red cross painted on the roof, was extensively bombarded.
There has yet to be any word about casualties.
The announcement comes as President Joe Biden and his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelensky continue their discussions.
Vladimir Putin, according to a Western intelligence officer, feels his military has “misled” him and has lost faith in his senior personnel.
According to a US official, the Russian president has not been told the full extent of his military losses because his aides are “too afraid to give him the truth.”
During the most recent war, at least two Russian strikes targeted a Red Cross site in Mariupol.
Satellite images from Maxar Technologies show that the facility, which had a big red cross painted on the roof, was heavily attacked.
There has been no news about casualties.
The statement comes as President Joe Biden and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky continue to meet.
The Prime Minister told the House of Commons Liaison Committee, “We are just setting out to help, to defend the people of Ukraine, to protect them against totally cruel and unreasonable violence.”
He also stated that sanctions against Moscow should be increased “until every single one of [Putin’s] troops has left Ukraine.”
