On Saturday, a Royal Navy bomb team was dispatched to Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, following claims of an unexploded device.

When the team arrived, they went out to investigate the thing and quickly discovered that it was harmless.

After being contacted to a complaint of “potential historic ordnance,” the Royal Navy claimed it cooperated with the coastguard to remove the buoy.

A bystander stated that the “seam along its middle” and the manner in which the team was carrying it led them to believe it was not a bomb.

A patrolling council ranger is thought to have discovered the device in the mud on Friday.

Following additional inspection, the bomb squad was summoned, and they proceeded to dig it out.

Before being transported to shore on a hovercraft, it was soon determined that it was a harmless buoy.

One eyewitness, who did not want to be identified, described it as the “most exciting event to happen in Weston in years.”

They added: “I had my doubts whether it was a real bomb because of the seam in the middle and how easily they were lifting it.”

A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: “Bravo Squadron of the Royal Navy’s Diving and Threat Exploitation Group was called to unconfirmed reports of possible historic ordnance in the water off Weston-Super-Mare.

“Upon arrival, the item was an old buoy. The squadron worked with the Coastguard to remove it from the water.”
