The Russia-appointed administration of Ukraine’s Kherson region will seek Moscow’s permission to establish a military facility on its territory, according to a local government source reported by Russia’s RIA news agency on Tuesday.

In February, Russia invaded Ukraine, capturing the Kherson area, which is next to Crimea, which Moscow had occupied since a previous fight in 2014.

It has started introducing the Russian rouble as a currency and has appointed a new administration.

“There should be a Russian military base in the Kherson region,” Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of Kherson’s “civil-military regional administration,” told RIA.

“We will ask for this, and this is what the whole population wants. This is essential and will be a guarantor of security for the region and its inhabitants.

The invasion is described by the Kremlin as a “special military operation” aimed at disarming Ukraine and removing extremist anti-Russian nationalists.

That has been regarded by Ukraine and its supporters as a spurious excuse for the conflict, which has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
