FDA: The design of Covid-19 vaccinations should be modified to target the Omicron variety for a new booster campaign intended at preventing an anticipated increase in infections this fall, as advised by government advisors.

Tuesday, a Food and Drug Administration advisory council voted 19-2 in favour of integrating genetic material from the rapidly-spreading Omicron strain into the next generation of booster vaccines.

If authorised by US regulators, the decision sets the way for Moderna and Pfizer to transition to a new generation of vaccinations that, according to experts, will provide superior protection against the most extensively circulating Covid strains.

Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, stated that officials were attempting to stay ahead of the virus by better matching vaccines to the circulating strain in order to provide broader and more persistent protection.

He added, “You know, for something that’s only nanometers in size, it’s really clever.”
