Joko Widodo, the president of Indonesia and chairman of the G20, departed for Europe on Sunday, where he plans to visit Russia and Ukraine and meet with their respective leaders in an effort to encourage peace talks.

Widodo has traveled to Germany to attend the G7 conference as an invited guest on June 26 and 27, and he will then travel to the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The mission is to ask… President Zelensky to open a dialogue forum for peace, to build peace because the war has to be stopped,” he told a press conference in Jakarta. Widodo stated that the two leaders will also examine the food supply chain, which “that needs to be reactivated” immediately.  Widodo is slated to travel from Kyiv to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin of Russia.

The visit is scheduled for June 30, according to Indonesian authorities.

“With the same mission, I will ask President Putin to open a dialogue and to immediately have a ceasefire and to stop the war,” he stated. Widodo said earlier in April that he had called Zelensky and invited him to attend the November 2022 G20 Summit in Bali as a guest.

This year, Indonesia holds the G20 presidency and has been under pressure from Western nations, particularly the United States, to ban Russia from the summit.

Widodo did not revoke the invitation to Russia, and Putin has stated his desire to attend the November conference, he said.

Indonesia, like the majority of other emerging countries, has attempted to keep a neutral stance and has called for a peaceful settlement to the conflict’s protracted duration.

In response to Zelensky’s request, Widodo refused to deploy weaponry to Ukraine and instead offered humanitarian supplies.
