the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s advisory council unanimously recommended that the organization approve COVID-19 vaccination for kids and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 17 offered by Moderna Inc. (MRNA.O).

The Moderna vaccine, which has long been accessible to those who are 18 years of age and older, has been administered to at least 77 million people in the United States.

The committee of outside experts will consider the COVID vaccine from Pfizer (PFE.N) and BioNTech (22UAy.DE) for children under 5 and, in both cases, as young as 6 months, on Wednesday.

The FDA is likely to soon approve the Moderna vaccine for children aged 6 to 17 even though it is not required to do so. The FDA often abides by the advice of its experts. The use of the vaccination must also be advised by the CDC. Its advisers’ group will convene on Friday and Saturday.

Long-standing worries have been raised about the possibility that the Moderna vaccine, which is administered at a greater dose than the Pfizer/BioNTech injection, may result in an increased risk of myocarditis and pericarditis, two conditions that are heart inflammations, particularly in younger males.

Following surveillance findings linking the Moderna vaccination to a higher risk of heart inflammation and the FDA delaying its approval of the injection to consider the risk of myocarditis, certain European nations have restricted usage of the vaccine for younger age groups.

However, they noted that the results were inconsistent across different safety databases and were not statistically significant, suggesting they could have been the result of chance. U.S. regulators presented data at the meeting on Tuesday that suggested Moderna’s vaccine may have a higher risk of heart inflammation in young men.

Manas Mishra reported from Bengaluru; Michael Erman added coverage from New Jersey; and Jason Neely and Bill Berkrot edited the story.
